The Calculus as a Psychological Tool
The method of the calculus, as referred to by Alfred Korzybski in Science and Sanity, offers the species a supreme critical evaluation-standard... problem resolving... scientific guide... and general purpose exploration tool. Anyone can apply the method to advance her/his knowledge and understanding of themselves and the 'world'. The method of the calculus incorporates all of the principles of general semantics. Korzybski referred to the calculus as "...the study of a continuous function by following its history by indefinitely small steps." Attendees are invited to find other words for "study", "continuous", "function", "following", "history", "indefinitely small", "steps", etc. Using these other words, they will be invited to create well formed sentences for all to hear. (Note: This is not a test. It will be introduced as an example of applying the method.)
Milton Dawes, an Ambassador at Large of the Institute of General Semantics and an IGS Fellow, has over the past 45 years, facilitated seminar-workshops to organizations, colleges, students, professionals, and others, in America, Canada, and Australia. He has presented papers at 5 International Conferences on General Semantics. Dawes was presented with the J. Talbot Winchell Award for Outstanding Contributions to General Semantics and also The Irving J. Lee Award for Excellence in Teaching General Semantics. Many of his articles on general semantics principles-and-practice have been published in ETC: A Review of General Semantics, and in Anekaant, a publication of The Balvant Parekh Centre for General Semantics and Other Human Sciences in Baroda, India. Dawes draws on a wide range of skills and experiences from his diverse interests to enliven his 'teaching'. These include having been a former member of The National Dance Theater of Jamaica; Leader of a 60’s rock and roll band described as A Harmonica Virtuoso; a member of The Jamaica Folk Singers; participant on the "Jamaica Pistol Team" to the Pan American Games, Winnipeg, Canada (1967) , and a Mr. Jamaica Body Building Contestant. He is one of the seven who started the "Tam Tam" (African drumming) on Mount Royal in Montreal Canada. And he teaches African drum rhythms.
The lecture will be held via Zoom. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Registrants will receive the Zoom link in advance of the lecture.
